Tree Conservation Report and Ontario Endangered Species Act Permit (Overall Benefit Permit – Butternut Trees) for the Harmony Riversbend Subdivision

Retained by Minto Communities, Ottawa, Ontario, 2017-2018

Dr. McKinley completed a Tree Conservation Report to support the Draft Plan of Subdivision and Zoning Amendment applications for the Harmony Riversbend Subdivision. Harmony Riversbend is a 148 unit residential development located adjacent to the Jock River in Ottawa, Ontario. The Tree Conservation Report included completion of a tree inventory and vegetation community mapping. During the tree inventory, endangered Butternut Trees were discovered within the Site.

As required by the regulations of the Ontario Endangered Species Act, Dr. McKinley facilitated completion of a follow-up Butternut Health Assessment. Working on behalf of Minto Communities, he obtained an Overall Benefit Permit under the Ontario Endangered Species Act, which authorized the development to proceed. In order to compensate for the removal of Butternut Trees and their habitat, Dr. McKinley designed and coordinated implementation of a Butternut Tree habitat compensation program. Lastly, he also wrote and provided photography for the Homeowner’s Handbook for Living with Nature, which was provided to homeowners living within the subdivision, in order to fulfill a condition of the Overall Benefit Permit.
